From 1860, Hugo Lonitz & Co. of Neuhaldensleben, Germany were producing
luxury and utilitarian majolica of a very high standard.
The wares were
exhibited alongside the important English Minton, and George Jones
makers at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876; Works of Art
Exhibition in Leipzig in 1879; and at the Melbourne Exhibition of 1880.
In 1885, they advertised their products as - Palissy-Majolica artistic
and useful objects, animal heads and statuettes, especially in imitation
of bronzes. They were awarded an order of merit at the Melbourne
Exhibition of 1880. |
Traditional Marks
Most Lonitz pieces are marked with an "Oval" containing the double fish as
pictured below. The number represents a production code for the
object or a Lonitz model number.
